The opera opens with Turiddu seen near Alfio's house in the early morning hours. Santuzza tries to discuss the Turiddu/Lola affair with Turiddu's mother, Lucia, but is interrupted by Alfio arriving in town. The townspeople process to the church singing an Easter Hymn. Outside the church, Santuzza reveals to Mamma Lucia that Turiddu is having an affair with Lola. Turiddu appears and an argument ensues between he and Santuzza. Lola, on her way to church, is rude to Santuzza. This escalates the argument between Santuzza and Turiddu, and she curses him as he enters the church. Alfio returns, Santuzza tells him of Lola and Turiddu's affair, and Alfio vows revenge. The crowd leaves church and heads to Mamma Lucia's tavern.
